They stepped over the log instead of around it. Rachele stumbled on it. If Jeff hadn’t been holding her hand, she might have fallen. As it was, he kept her on her feet, but the motion caused the log to move, to roll slightly. And what they thought was a log wasn’t a log at all. The bloody stump of an arm thumped to the soft ground near Rachele’s nearly bare, flip-flop clad foot. In the moonlight, Jeff realized that another few inches and the arm would have fallen across her instep.
They both stared down, stunned, as if convincing themselves of what really stared back at them.
Rachele’s scream pierced the night.
